John 3:16
by Steve Higginbotham
January 6, 2008

How many of you know a man by the name of Rollen Stewart?  Name doesn’t ring a bell?  Well, allow me to give you a few hints...

  • John 3:16

  • Rainbow Afro

  • Sporting events

Enough said, right?  Probably.  If you’re old enough to remember the early 1980’s, you’ll remember Rollen Stewart as the man with a rainbow afro who attended major sporting events, holding up a sign that simply said “John 3:16.”  He was everywhere…baseball, football, golf, even the Olympics.

But whatever happened to that man?  Well, in 1992 he was charged with kidnapping three individuals and is presently serving three consecutive life sentences in prison.  Whatever message he wanted to impress on those who read his sign is overshadowed by his personal life.

Now I say all of that, not to pick on this man, but rather to learn lesson from him, and allow his life to serve as a warning.  We all need to be reminded that a lifetime of good can be destroyed by a single choice.  As we begin this new year, let us pursue good, and keep in mind that the good we are pursuing can be destroyed by a single foolish decision.
