Have you ever noticed how many
maxim's our society has? There are countless "general truths"
that seem so axiomatic that no one challenges their
truthfulness. One of those maxims oft repeated states that
"every little bit helps."
If I may be so bold, I would
like to challenge the truthfulness of this maxim. Sometimes,
"every little bit" doesn't help. Sometimes, what is called
for is genuine sacrifice, and requires more than just a
"little bit."
"Every little bit
helps" has sometimes been used to salve the
consciences of those who are stingy and greedy. Sometimes a
"little bit" is woefully inadequate and what is needed is for
deep, committed sacrifice.
We will pray before the weekly
offering and thank God for the "s-m-a-a-a-l-l" portion we are
about to give back to Him. [That's one prayer some people can
honestly pray].
While I don't deny that there
are occasions when "every little bit helps," I'm convinced
there are far more occasions when "every little bit" doesn't
help. Friends, don't settle for a little when God needs a
lot.
Give it some thought.
