And I Thought You Were My Friend

Several months ago, I wrote an article entitled, “Jack the Baptizer.” It was an article about a friend of mine who, in spite of several disabilities due to his cerebral palsy, was able to teach and baptize three friends.
Well, my friend, Jack Higginbotham (no relation) is still at work trying to reach the lost with the gospel. Recently, Jack sent me a flyer that he shares with people with whom he comes in contact.
The flyer says, “Although I have a speech impediment, my heart has been made whole and my soul has been saved by Jesus Christ. My desire is to share this with you. Please consider this note a personal and heartfelt invitation to learn of your Savior…” — Jack Higginbotham
After that introduction, he shares this message…
My Friend
D.J. Higgins
My friend, I stand in the judgment now,
And feel that you’re to blame somehow.
On earth, I walked with you day by day,
And never did you point the way.
You knew the Lord in truth and glory,
But never did you tell the story.
My knowledge then was very dim,
You could have led me safe to him.
Though we lived together on the earth,
You never told me of the second birth.
And now I stand this day condemned,
Because you failed to mention him.
You taught me many things, that’s true;
I called you “friend” and trusted you.
But I learn now that it’s too late:
You could have kept me from this fate.
We walked by day and talked by night,
And yet you showed me not the light.
You let me live, and love, and die,
You knew I’d never live on high.
Yes, I called you “friend” in life,
And trusted you through joy and strife.
And yet, on coming to this end,
I cannot now call you “my friend.”
Jack then writes, “Because you are my friend, I invite you to study the Bible and learn about Jesus. I will help you in any way I can…I hope and pray there will never be a time when you cannot call me your friend.”
My good friend Jack refuses to let his limitations to keep him from his Lord’s work. He refuses to keep silent when he possesses the good news that can save a soul! So, Jack does what he can. Maybe we all need to do some “soul-searching.”
